Isaac Julien & Russell Maliphant
Cast No Shadow
With choreographer Russell Maliphant, artist Isaac Julien
will present his first evening-length performance, Cast No Shadow, a PERFORMA Commission with Sadler??™s Wells, London, as a part of BAM??™s 25th Next Wave Festival. Cast No Shadow unites three works to create a spellbinding multimedia performance. Lauded around the world for his extravagantly beautiful film installations, Julien in Cast No Shadow re-imagines three epic journeys through dramatically different landscapes, collaborating for the first time with Maliphant, internationally acclaimed for dance that investigates gravity and momentum with beautiful clarity.
First conceived by Julien more than three years ago, when PERFORMA director RoseLee Goldberg invited Julien to create his first evening-length performance, Cast No Shadow consists of three parts: True North, Fant??me Afrique, and Small Boats. Each section contains a vastly different visual environment that seduces the viewer with its pristine aesthetics, while an abstract narrative??”part historical, part mythological, and part theoretical??”unfolds against several unique geographies. Using three profound and provocative tales, and with original music by Paul Sch??tze and Andy Cowton. the work creates a rich visceral experience filled with political and cultural critiques.
